As you might guess countries are not ever-existent entities but they are the sum of many circumstances and efforts to build. Despite that Espain is Different, in this regard, Spain is not different.

Spain is the history of a brotherhood where the only brother who were able to stand aside was Portugal. The Portuguese resisted many aggressions from the Castilian neighbour and even its invasion and occupation (Sixteenth and Seventeenth century).
Construction of the Spanish identity
The Spain identity has a long trajectory. It begins with the Romans who form the basis of our present culture (same as others such as Italians-our cousins- or French-cousins in second degree), continue with almost 800 years, in different degrees, of Muslim domination, the unification of the last Muslim Kingdom of Grenade in 1492 and the Cristian Kingdoms around the same time under the hegemony of the strongest at the time, Castile (Aragon and Navarre)and the beginning of the Spanish Empire that brought together this same kingdoms in the pursue of a dream.
